PIONEERS DROP SEASON OPENER AGAINST ONEONTA

UTICA, NY - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team advanced its record to 3-0 on the year after a 15-5 victory over host Utica College in non conference play on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons outscored the Pioneers 8-1 in the first half and outshot Utica 34-15 on the day on their way to a ten goal victory.

The contest was the season-opener for Utica, which drops to 0-1 on the year.

Oneonta jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead in the first 23 minutes of the contest. Rosemarie Fazio tallied all three of her goals in a span of 11:02 in the first half, while Somer Shuffield, Caroline Tulley, Rebecca Monteith and Kristin Scaringi each found the back of the net once in the first half.

Sophomore Katlyn Banker (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) opened the scoring for Utica on the afternoon with 4:35 to go in the first half of play. The Red Dragons would post one more goal before the half to take an 8-1 lead after 30 minutes of play.

Oneonta went on to score four of the first five goals in the second half to take a 12-2 lead with 21:06 left in regulation.

Junior all-conference midfielder Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), who extended her scoring streak to 32 games, netted all three of her goals in the second half, while classmate Julianne Schultheiss (Commack, NY/Commack) added her first goal of the season for UC with 15 seconds to go in the contest.

Sophomore goalie Shelby Barbay (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) made a career-high 18 saves in net for Utica, while Annelise Muscietta stopped six shots for Oneonta.

Utica returns to non conference action Wednesday at Geneseo. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
