The Utica College women's lacrosse team lost to nationally-ranked No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology 19-3 in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Field. All three of the Pioneers goals were scored in the first half of play as UC snapped a three game winning streak and evened its record at 3-3 on the year.
Junior
Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) netted a team-best two goals, while
Julianne Schultheiss (Commack, NY/Commack) added one for Utica. Sophomore goalie
Shelby Barbay (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) stopped 13 shots – including 11 in the first half – to pace the Pioneers.
The Ducks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Schulthiess got the Pioneers on the board in the 22nd minute with her 11th goal of the season to cut the Stevens lead to three. Stevens answered with three straight goals before Kohanski found the back of the net for the Pioneers to cut the deficit to 7-2 mid way through the first half.
Stevens outscored Utica 4-1 in the final 11 minutes of the half to take an 11-3 lead into intermission.
Stevens outscored UC 8-0 in the second half to earn the victory and improve to 7-1 on the year.
Shannon McFadden made five save in net for the Ducks, while Meg Collins added two saves in 21 minutes of relief. Stevens out shot Utica 37-12 on the day and also earned a 16-13 ground ball advantage.
UC returns to action Wednesday when they travel to conference rival Ithaca College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
