UC SPLITS A PAIR IN SEASON FINALE AT HAMILTON

The Utica College softball team split its double header at Hamilton College Thursday falling in the first game, 5-3, before winning the second, 6-2. The Pioneers were led by freshman Jackie Gallagher (Cortlandt Manor, NY) who went 5-for-8 on the day with two runs and Hannah Barton (Adams Basin, NY/Brockport) (Adams Bason, NY) who delivered two hits, three RBI's and one run.

UC started off game one in a hole, after a four hit first inning put Hamilton up 3-0. The Pioneers answered back in the top of the second when junior Brittany Newton (Whitesboro, NY) doubled to score freshman Courtney Rainbow (Truxton, NY) from first. After allowing the Continentals to get up 4-1 in the fourth inning, Utica College posted a strong inning in the top of the fifth as junior Kim Martin (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) (Prospect, NY) walked to start off the inning, and Gallagher singled to put runners in scoring position. Following a Plummer pop-up, Barton would single to left field to score Gallagher and Martin as the Pioneers pulled to within a run.

The Pioneers would come up short as Hamilton went on to win 5-3. Freshman Stephanie Romanow (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) was dealt her seventh loss of the year as she went five innings giving up nine hits and four earned runs.

In the second game UC would send Butler to the mound in hopes of breaking even on the day. The Pioneers were able to get on the board first as Barton singled to score Martin from third. On the next at bat senior Angel Donaghue (Cortlandt Manor, NY) hit a double to left and was thrown out at third as Barton came in to score and UC held a 2-0 lead. After Hamilton tied the game up in the bottom of the first, the Pioneers looked to answer back in the top of the third. Donahue, in her final game as a Pioneer, came up to bat with two on and hit a single scoring Plummer from third to put UC up 3-2.

Utica College would go on to win by a score of 6-2.

Butler earned her sixth win of the season as she went seven innings giving up six hits and two earned runs.

The Pioneers finish their season at 13-27 overall and 4-10 in the Empire 8 while the Colonials finish at 5-23.
