UTICA, NY - The Utica College football team (1-0) will travel to Castleton State College (0-1) to take on the Spartans this Saturday Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off an impressive performance where they set a new school-record for most points scored in a game by defeating Becker 78-19 last week.
Sophomore running back
Jake Scott (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) led the Pioneer offense in their victory last week rushing for 99 yards while scoring a career-high three touchdowns in the process. Sophomore starting quarterback
Andrew Benkwitt (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) also turned in an impressive game throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns while completing 18-of-26 passes. Overall the Pioneers combined for 528 offensive yards (357 passing, 171 rushing).
Utica's defense also played well against Becker by holding them to just 213 yards offensively. Senior linebacker
Travis Ladd (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy) led the way with 13 tackles and one sack. Sophomore defensive end
James Brain (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) had a great day also with ten tackles, three for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble.
Jon White (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and
Rob Alexander (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Dobbs Ferry) both intercepted passes for the Pioneer defense.
UC hopes to have the same result against Castleton State this week. Last year they beat the Spartans 62-10 during homecoming weekend. Utica put up 545 yards offensively, while holding Castleton to just 134 yards.
