The Utica College field hockey team dropped a non-conference game to Union Wednesday night by a score of 2-1. Utica, now 2-3 on the season, hasn't beat Union since 2006 when the Pioneers' won 4-1.
Utica senior
Lindsey Jester (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) of scored the first goal of the game, and second of the season, just 5:46 in to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Senior
Erin Murphy (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) assisted Jester's goal. That would be it for the Pioneers offense, as the failed to score for the remainder of the contest.
Union's Kelsey Powers tied the game at one when she put one in the cage 35 minutes into the game. Lauren Winchell added an assist. Powers didn't stop there, just 15 minutes later she netted her second goal of the game, which proved to be the game winner, assisted by Caroline Moran.
Junior goalie
Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) played a good game for Utica allowing two goals, and making 14 saves over the course of 70 minutes.
Utica was outshot by Union 22-14, and Union had a 12-5 penalty corner advantage.
The Pioneers open up Empire 8 play on Saturday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Nazareth. The contest is schedule for 1:30 p.m. Utica hopes to end its current two game losing streak this weekend.
