PIONEERS TAKE DOWN NAZ IN PENALTY STROKES

UTICA, N.Y. (9/18/2010) – The Utica College field hockey team won 2-1, in penalty strokes, after the score was tied at 0-0 through two regulation halves and two overtime periods against host Nazareth College Saturday. The contest marked the Empire 8 Conference season opener for both squads. Mallory Mariano (Oneida, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill) and Kim Martin (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) netted the penalty strokes to lift the Pioneers to victory.

UC is now 3-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Nazareth remains winless at 0-4 and 0-1 in the E8. The Pioneers out shot Nazareth 32-13 on the day and earned an 18-6 penalty corner advantage.

Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) stopped seven shots in the cage for the Pioneers, while Kelsey Evans added 22 saves in the loss for Nazareth.

UC returns to action against visiting Geneseo on Wednesday afternoon. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
