The Utica College volleyball team defeated Elms College in its final contest at the Union College Invitational Saturday. The Pioneers dropped three straight contests to open up the two-day tournament. #Aundrea Dorie@ led the way for Utica with 14 kills over the course of four games. Mimi O'Hara added a team-high 32 assists.
In the first game, the Pioneers fell to Cortland 3-0 (25-11,25-12,25-6) on Friday. Dorie led the team with four kills while
Liz Sacco (Franklin, Mass. /Franklin) had two kills of her own. The Pioneers as a team were able to come up with a block.
The Pioneers dropped the next match to Skidmore 3-0 (25-16,25-13,25-17). As a team UC had 17 kills, including four from Dorie, and four from
Stephanie Dew (Boxford, Mass. /Masconomet), who finished the contest with a .300 attacking percentage.
Next up for Utica was Oswego. The Pioneers lost by the score of 3-0 (25-9,25-11,25-21). Rachel Pratt-Smith had one kill and five assists. Utica showed improvement as it had three blocks as a team.
The Pioneers concluded the tournament against Elms. Utica got its first win of the season by beating the Blazers 3-0 (27-25,25-22,25-17). Utica (1-10) had two team blocks.
Heather Jackson (Weare, NH/John Stark Regional) led the way with a career-high eleven kills and she also added twelve digs.
The Pioneers next game will be their home opener as they take on Cazenovia Monday night at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
