Canton, N.Y (09/05/2010)- The Utica College field hockey team had to settle for a split in the two game weekend set as they fell to host St. Lawrence 5-1 to close out the Fall Field Hockey Fest Tournament. The Pioneers ended up finishing in second place in the tournament.
Emily Swits of St. Lawrence (1-1, 0-0) scored the first goal of the game at 10:53 as she hit a shot off the post and in. The Pioneers (1-1, 0-0) would respond just under seven minutes later as
Mallory Mariano (Oneida, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill) took a quick pass from
Avion Ashton (Trinidad/Sixth Form Government) and shot it hard inside the near post to even the game at one goal apiece.
The tie-score would not last for long as Erika Swits once again gave St. Lawrence the lead by receiving a centering pass from Brooke Maloney and redirected the ball into the back of the net. From that point on, St. Lawrence never looked back as it built a comfortable 4-1 lead at the end of the first half.
There was not as much offense in the second half. St. Lawrence's Brooke Maloney moved around a defender and beat UC goalie
Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) inside the far post to score an unassisted goal, marking the only goal for either team in the second half.
St. Lawrence outshot Utica 11-10. Storms stopped nine shots for the Pioneers while her counter-parts; Brittany Clark and Maureen McCoy had a combined total of nine saves for St. Lawrence.
The Pioneers next game will be on the road as they play host Oswego on Sept. 8th at 5 p.m. at the Laker Field Complex.
