Elmira, N.Y. (1/21/2011) – The Utica College men's hockey team lost 5-1 to Elmira Friday night. The Pioneers were never able to get their offense to click throughout the night. Utica fell to 13-5 overall and 2-3 in ECAC Men's West play with the loss.
The first period went to the Soaring Eagles, as Jesper Strale of Elmira scored the first goal of the game on the power play just six minutes into the contest. Elmira would make it 2-0 just ten minutes later as Darcy Vaillancourt put one in the back of the net.
The Soaring Eagles continued the scoring parade in the second period, making the score 3-0, 10:48 in, fromt he stick of John Clewlow. Just 30 seconds later Vaillancourt scored his second goal of the game giving Elmira a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Pioneers would finally get on the board 1:30 later, as
Mike Slowikowski (Ewing, NJ/N.J. Hitmen (EJHL)) scored his third goal of the season, assisted by
Jordan Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Northwood School). The Soaring Eagles stuck right back and ended the period with a 5-1 lead after Dylan Herold scored a power play goal at 15:24. That would turn out to be the last goal of the evening.
The Pioneers power play was unable to record a tally as they went 0-for-4, while Elmira went 2-for-7 with the man advantage.
Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) made 22 saves, allowing four goals in 31 minutes of work.
Evan Smith (Penticton, British Columbia/Calgary Royals (AJHL)) came on in relief making 13 saves and allowing just one goal in 29 minutes.
The Pioneers return home next weekend when they play two games against Hobart.
