Volleyball Drops a Pair At Canton Tri-Match

UC Volleyball returns to action this weekend at the Oswego Tournament
Oswego 3, Utica 0 - Box Score (25-18, 25-7, 25-19)

Canton 3, Utica 0 - Box Score (27-25, 25-15, 25-15) 

Utica, NY (10-1-11) – The Utica College volleyball team competed in the SUNY Canton Tri-Match Saturday in Canton, NY.  The Utica College Pioneers, Oswego State Lakers and SUNY Canton Kangaroos all competed against each other.  UC was led by local freshman standout Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) who registered 11 kills, five dig and one ace throughout the two matches.

In the first match, Utica squared off against the host however lost 27-25, 25-15, and 25-15.  Junior Mimi O'Hara (Highland Falls, NY/James I. O'Neill) had a team-high nine digs against the host Kangaroos. 

Sophomore's Liz Sacco (Franklin, Mass. /Franklin) and Hayley Strife (Lowville, NY/Lowville) combined for 10 kills, while sophomore Leah Kazalski (Greene, NY/Greene) and freshman Taylor Grunert (Lowville, NY/Beaver River) totaled 10 digs; all had five apiece for UC. 

In the second match against Oswego State, UC lost 25-18, 25-7, and 25-19.  Kazalski tallied a season-high 10 digs for the Pioneers and racked up a total of 15 on the day. 

Freshman setter Kelle Furno had 11 assists, two kills and two service aces against the Lakers.  Furno had 27 total assists in both matches and now has 184 on the season, leading Utica. 

The Pioneers return to action this weekend as they travel to Oswego, NY for the Oswego Tournament featuring The College at Brockport, SUNY Canton, Utica College and the host Oswego State.  On Friday, UC will face Brockport (4 p.m.) and SUNY Canton (6 p.m.).  On Sunday, Utica will face Oswego State (3:30 p.m.)
