Volleyball Comes Out Hot But Sage Overpowers Pioneers in Final Three Sets

Utica, NY (10-27-11) – The Utica College volleyball team dropped a four-game set Wednesday night to the visiting Sage Gators after winning the first match 25-11.  Freshman Mariah Walker (Frankfort, NY/Franfort-Schuyler) racked a team-high 10 kills as she moved into a tie for fourth on the squad with 99 on the season. 

UC came out hot as it downed Sage in the opening bout, however were unable to keep up momentum as the Gators streaked in the final three matches defeating the Pioneers 25-17, 25-15, and 25-21.  The Sage College moved their season record to 14-19 overall while Utica falls to 2-30 on the season.

Sophomore Hayley Strife (Lowville, NY/Lowville), of Lowville, NY, tied her season-high with nine kills and is now second for UC with 100 on the season.  Strife also served up three aces on the night.

Local New York Mills native, freshman Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills), leads the team in kills with 157 as she added seven spikes. Nicotera also collected 13 digs on the evening to move her season total to 249.

Freshman setter, Kelle Furno, supplied 25 assists as she climbs close to 400 in her inaugural campaign (382).

UC digs leader, sophomore Leah Kazalski (Greene, NY/Greene), stopped 16 kill attempts as she added to her team-leading 281.

The Pioneers head to Keuka Park, NY Saturday to wrap up their season at the Keuka College Tournament.  UC is scheduled to play the host, Keuka Storm, at 11 a.m. followed by Morrisville State College at 1 p.m.
