Utica, NY (10-8-11) - The Utica College men's soccer team lost 2-1 Saturday afternoon to Ithaca College at Carp Wood Field. Senior
Jonathan Wood (Derry, NH/Pinkerton) netted the Pioneers' lone goal.
UC came out and struck first at 14:38, when Wood found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season, unassisted, to give Utica an early lead.
Just over 11 minutes later, Ithaca answered as Zach Hutchinson converted a penalty stroke at 26:24, to tie the game at 1-1.
The home team scored the game-winner just before halftime, at 43:24, when Jon Sylvertsky netted his first goal of the season from the right wing, unassisted.Â
In the second half, the Pioneers outshot the Bombers 7-4 and had a 3-2 advantage on corners but nontheless could not convert as they dropped their fifth game of the season by a one goal margin.
Sophomore goalie
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) recorded four saves while allowing two first half goals as he fell to 5-5 overall on the season. His counter part, Ithaca goalie Jordan Gentile, also saved four shots however only allowed one goal as he improved to 3-5-1 on the season.
The Pioneers maintain an overall record of 5-5 however fall to 0-3 in the E8, while the Bombers are now 3-5-1 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday as they travel to Aurora, NY to challenge Wells College. The non-conference match-up is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. The Express is currently 6-5 overall including a NEAC record of 3-2.
