The Lakers outshot the home team 48-24 on the evening as they pushed into second place in the standings. The Pioneers are right back on the ice Saturday as they head to Oswego for the second match of a home-and-home series against the Lakers. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3 p.m.
The Lakers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, just 1:14 into the contest, as Melissa Seamont netted her second goal of the season, even-strenghted. Oswego's Jocelyn St. Clair and Chelsea Hunt tallied assists on the play. The visiting team outshot UC 15-7 in the first 20:00 of play.
After two Laker penalties, early in the second period, Utica converted a six-on-four power-play to knot the game at 1-1. Sophomore
Brittany DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA/The Winchendon School) registered her third goal of the season off dishes from freshman
Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) and junior
Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride). UC killed two Oswego power-plays, over the next 18:00 of action, as the teams headed into the locker room tied.
Early in the third period, Utica was penalized for a hooking call, at 1:31, but again killed the Lakers threat for the fifth consecutive time. Then, following five minutes of scoreless action, UC capitalized on a interference call as freshman
Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) tipped a
MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) bullet just six seconds into a UC power-play to take a 2-1 cushion, at 8:02. Roy and junior
Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) registered assists on the go-ahead score. The Pioneers killed back-to-back power-plays at 11:52 and 14:25 as they maintained the lead with under five minutes to play.
However, at 19:30, Roy was whistled for interference and Oswego State, previously 0-for-7 with a one-man advantage, converted a six-on-four power-play to send the match into overtime.
Laker captain, sophomore Carly Henderson, slapped home the game-winner at 3:15 in OT to hand Utica it's third consecutive loss.
