2011-2012 Schedule

UTICA, NY (11/18/11) - The Utica College men's basketball team travels to Hamburg, NY this weekend for the Hilbert Tip-off Tournament.  The tournament will be held at the Hafner Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday.

Tip-Off Tournament: UC is scheduled to play Clarkson University Friday at 5 p.m. and either Hilbert or Keuka on Saturday … Clarkson opened up its season Tuesday with an 86-69 victory over Paul Smith's College … Hilbert is coming off a loss at Nazareth where it fell to the Golden Flyers 77-76 … Keuka lost its opening game to SUNY Canton by a score of 67-49. 

Scouting the Opponents: Last season, Clarkson finished the season with a 12-13 overall record while going 4-10 in the Liberty League … Hilbert finished 12-15 overall including an 8-10 mark in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference … The Hawks advanced to the conference tournament but fell in the semifinals to La Roche College … Keuka compiled a 5-17 overall record last year to along with a 4-14 record in the NEAC.

Pioneers in Tournament Play:  Utica has took home the trophy in eight of its last nine tournaments dating back to the 2002-23 season … The Pioneers have posted an impressive 17-1 record in regular-season tournament play.

Season-Opener: The Pioneers dropped their season-opener to SUNY Potsdam, 72-67, Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center in Utica, NY … UC was led by junior forward Alex Meyer (Salt Point, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) who posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Returners: The squad returns six players from last season's roster including seniors Marlon Davidson (Jamaica, NY/August Martin) and George Schultz (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Memorial) at guard, juniors Jeff Ward (Ossining, NY/Ossining High School) and Alex Meyer (Salt Point, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) in the post and sophomores Rich Smith (Albany, NY/La Salle Institute) and Jevin McClendon (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) on the swing  … Ward and Meyer combined for 17 points, 23 rebounds, five assists and four blocks as they kicked off their junior campaigns … Schultz and Davidson came off the bench for 10 minutes of combined play while Smith and McClendon totaled 27 minutes of action.

Welcome Newcomers: UC welcomed 12 new players to this season's roster … Six of those players competed in the first game, including three in the starting line-up …  Junior transfer Matt Baldwin (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville), freshman Aaron Nevins (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and senior Reggie German (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) earned a spot on the starting five while freshmen Xavier Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley), Walkery Mills and Marty Felicia (Phoenix, NY/Phoenix) combined for 35 minutes off the bench …  Baldwin opened up his UC campaign with 12 points and five assists including 4-of-5 from the line … Nevins, at the guard, netted eight points, three assists and two steals … German posted 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting along with four boards and two assists in 31 minutes … Local native, Walkery Mills, opened up his debut with 12 points in 19 minutes shooting 2-for-2 from line and behind the arc.

Return to the Hardwood:  Following this weekend's tournament, the Pioneers return to action Monday, Nov. 28 as they challenge Oneonta State … The non-conference contest will be held at Dewar Arena located in the Alumni Field House on Oneonta campus … Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
