Utica, NY (11-8-11) – The Utica College women's hockey team prepares for a home and home series against Oswego State this weekend. On Friday, the Pioneers will host the Lakers at the Utica Memorial Auditorium with the puck scheduled to drop at 4 p.m. On Saturday, UC will travel to Oswego, NY for a scheduled start time of 3 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
The Match-Up: The Pioneers are currently 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the ECAC Women's West Conference after being swept at nationally-ranked No. 1 RIT. UC lost 7-1 on Saturday and 8-1 on Sunday in Rochester, NY at the Ritter Arena. The Lakers hold an overall record of 1-2-1 including a 1-0-1 mark in the conference. After losing both games to Adrian College on opening weekend, Oswego went 1-0-1 against Cortland. The Lakers took home an overtime tie on Saturday before getting their first win on Sunday as they defeated the Red Dragons 2-1.
All-Time vs. the Lakers: Last season, UC swept Oswego on the road by scores of 2-1 and 3-1. Since 2006-07, Utica holds a 10-1 advantage over SUNY Oswego while outscoring the Lakers 41-17 in those contests. Oswego State's lone win came back on Feb. 6, 2010 in a 3-2 overtime victory.
The Sophomore Show: Four UC sophomores, including
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects),
Brittany DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA/The Winchendon School),
Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) and
Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks), have recorded six of Utica's seven goals this season. Myers and DelleChiaie have two goals apiece while Tice and Maines each have one. Freshman
Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) has the other UC goal as she netted her first collegiate score over the weekend against RIT.
M.M. in Action: Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) picked up right where she left off at the conclusion of her freshman campaign as she currently leads the UC offense with six points on two goals and four assists over four games. The Las Vegas native is en route to the record books as she has 39 career points in 31 games throughout her first two seasons with Utica. In her career, she has tallied 23 goals, 16 assists, and three hat-tricks while earning second team All-Conference and a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
Roy in the Record Books: Senior defender
MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) was named the College's Female Athlete of the Week Monday. Roy, a native of Concord, NH, registered an assist on the Pioneers' lone goal in an 8-1 loss to nationally ranked No. 2 RIT on Sunday. With the assist, Roy has 50 career points, which moves her ahead of Courtney Bank '07 for first place on the College's all-time scoring list for a defenseman. Roy has the most games played among active players with 82 and she has registered 16 goals and 34 assists over the course of her career.
The Net-Minders: The Pioneers currently feature a two-goalie system with senior
Marissa Hotaling (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and sophomore
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) splitting time. Hotaling holds a 1-1 record in 68:10 while registering 42 saves and allowing four goals, good enough for a save percentage of .913. Hamel is also 1-1 and has recorded 66 saves while allowing seven goals. She recently tied the college's all-time record for saves in a single game after making 56 stops against RIT Saturday. Both goalies have a goals against average of 3.5.
Back on the Ice: Following this weekend, the Pioneers return to action Friday, Nov. 19 and Saturday, Nov. 20 as they travel Elmira College in a weekend set held at the Murray Athletic Center. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Soaring Eagles are currently 1-1 overall and will travel to Cortland to face the Red Dragons this coming weekend.
