Second Half Woes Continue as York Tops Utica

Rochester, NY (12/10/2011) – The Utica College men's basketball team led at the half for the third time in four games but York College rallied with a huge 60 point second half effort to earn an 83-79 victory over UC in the consolation game of the of the 26th Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament at Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.  Junior Matt Baldwin (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) led UC with 26 points, while freshman Xavier Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) added 14 points off the bench for the Pioneers. 

Utica (3-5) held York to just 23 points in the first half, but the defensive unit could not keep the pace up, as York shot an incredible 73.1% (19-of-26) in the final 20 minutes to earn the four point victory.  UC led for the majority of the first half and used a 12-2 run, after five 3-pointers in a span of 7:28, to give the Pioneers a 28-18 advantage with 3:31 to go in the first half of play. 

York (2-8) used a 14-5 run in a span of less than three minutes to take its first lead of the second half, 44-42, with 13:59 to go in the contest.  UC would not go down easily and the Pioneers were able to manage a six point lead, 58-52, with 8:01 left in regulation.  However, York used a late 9-0 run to take an eight point advantage with less than a minute to go to earn the non conference victory. 

Reggie German (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored 15 points for Utica, while junior Jeff Ward (Ossining, NY/Ossining High School) chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds.

Four different players scored in double figures for York including Tony Vails (19 points), Omari Phipps (19), Mark Evans (15) and Shamir Wilkinson (10).

Utica will wrap up the semester on Tuesday night when it hosts non conference foe Union College at the Clark Athletic Center for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
