Manhattanville 6, #8 Utica 3 - Box Score

Rye, N.Y. (12/1/2011) – The nationally-ranked No. 8 Utica College men's hockey team lost to host Manhattanvile 6-3 in an ECAC Men's West Conference contest Friday night. The Valiants jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period and never looked back as they handed the Pioneers their third loss of the season.  All three of the Pioneers losses have come in conference play.  UC (5-3) returns to action at home on Saturday night when it takes on Buffalo State at 6 p.m.

Manhattanville (2-3-1) took a 2-0 lead just 8:48 into the first period of play behind goals from Marcus von Sydow and Brendan Turner.  The Pioneers were able to answer in the 11th minute of the contest to cut the home teams lead in half.  Junior forward Evan Chlanda (Islip, NY/Springfield (EJHL)) netted his sixth goal of the season off assists from Steve Zappia (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres (OJAHL)) and senior captain Tim Coffman (Elverson, PA/Laconia (AJHL)).  However, von Sydow would add his second goal of the season before the end of the first to give the Valiants a 3-1 lead at the intermission.

Manhattanville dominated the second period of play, outshooting UC 16-6, while adding an insurance goal to essentially seal the victory.

Trailing 5-1, the Pioneers netted two goals in a span of less than three minutes to put a scare in the home team.  Mike Slowikowski (Ewing, NJ/N.J. Hitmen (EJHL)) and senior assistant captain Max White (Sands Point, NY/NY Bobcats (AJHL)) tallied the Pioneer goals.  Junior transfer Cody Adams (Duncan, British Columbia/Plattsburgh (SUNYAC)) tallied an assist on each goal and he now has seven points this season (one goal, six assists).

The Valiants added the final goal of the contest, just two minutes after White's tally, to seal the key conference victory.

Sophomore goalie Evan Smith (Penticton, British Columbia/Calgary Royals (AJHL)) stopped 32 shots as he relieved classmate Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) at the start of the second period.  Therrien made six stops in the first period of play.
