Pioneers Set to Battle Local Rival Wildcats

Utica, NY (12-27-11) – The Utica College women's basketball team looks to snap a two game skid Tuesday as it heads across town to challenge local rival SUNYIT.

Time & Place: Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Wildcat Gymnasium in Marcy, NY.

The Match-Up: The Pioneers are currently 5-4 overall this season and look to get back to their winning ways following a two-game losing streak against Liberty League opponents RPI and Union … The Wildcats are currently 4-1 on the season, while riding a four game winning spree … SUNYIT lost its season opener to Ithaca, 70-60, before rattling off four straight.

Pioneers vs. Wildcats All-Time: In heads up play, UC is 16-0 against SUNYIT dating back to the 2002-2003 season … Utica has outscored SUNY by an impressive margin of 20 points over the course of those 16 contests.

Fiore on Fire: Sophomore forward Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) has been a force thus far, ranking third in the E8 in scoring (16.9 Avg/G), fifth in rebounding (8.1 Avg/G), and tenth in field goal percentage (.443) …  The squad is 3-0 this season when Fiore has dropped 20+ points.

McGee Among the League Leaders:  Senior point guard Katie McGee (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth) ranks among the league leaders in nine different categories in the highly competitive Empire 8 … McGee leads the league in assists (5.4 Avg/G) and minutes played (36.8 Avg/G) and she is third in 3-point percentage (44.1%) and tenth in scoring (12.2 Avg/G) … The Philadelphia, PA native also ranks ninth in steals (2.1 Avg/G), field goal (45.3%) and free throw percentage (73%)

E8 Conference Standings: Conference play has yet to begin but here is a look at the E8 teams in non-conference play so far ... Alfred University and Ithaca College presently share first with a 7-1 record, while Hartwick holds second place solely at 7-2 following six straight victories … Nazareth jumped into fourth ahead of Utica (5-4) after two consecutive wins and now holds a 4-3 mark … Trailing in sixth is St. John Fisher with a 3-5 ledger, followed by Stevens in seventh at 2-5 and Elmira in eighth at 2-7.

UC Returns to Action:  On Friday Jan. 6, 2012, the Pioneers open up Empire 8 Conference play as the host of a weekend set with back-to-back games against Nazareth and St. John Fisher … UC welcomes the Golden Flyers to the Clark Athletic Center on Friday for a 6 p.m. scheduled tip-off followed by the Cardinals of St. John Fisher on Saturday at 4 p.m.
