Utica, N.Y. (12/9/2011) - Sophomore goalie Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) recorded his first shutout of the season after stopping 30 shots and senior captain Tim Coffman (Elverson, PA/Laconia (AJHL)) tied the school-record for assists in a career (71) as the nationally-ranked No. 10 Utica College men's hockey team skated to a 1-0 victory over visiting Potsdam State at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Friday night.  Junior assistant captain Evan Chlanda (Islip, NY/Springfield (EJHL)) netted the game-winner early in the second period to pace the Pioneers (7-3).

UC returns to action for the 7th annual New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss Saturday night against Salve Regina at 7 p.m. Fans who bring a stuffed animal to the game will receive free admission.  Once UC scores its first goal fans will have a chance to throw the stuffed animals out on to the ice for collection and distribution to local children throughout the holiday season.

Potsdam (5-5) put the pressure on late, out shooting UC 17-9 in the final period, but Therrien and the Pioneer defense stood strong, outlasting two power-play opportunities, to lead UC to its second straight victory.

Sophomore Ridge Garbutt (Toronto, Ontario/Brewster Academy (NH)) registered his first assist of the season, as he was credited with a helper on Chlanda's seventh goal of the season.  Potsdam net minder Kevin MacFarland, a junior, stopped 42 shots in his third start of the season.

Utica is now 6-0 in non-conference play this season and they have now won 15 of their last 17 games at home headed into another non-conference contest at home against the Seahawks.

The Pioneers outshot the visitors 43-30 on the evening and both teams went scoreless on the power-play. 34 of the Pioneers 43 shots came in the first two periods of play.
