PIONEERS FALL SHORT TO REIGNING NCAA CHAMPS AMHERST

Amherst, N.Y. (2/17/2011) - The Utica College women's hockey team fell short to non-conference opponent and reigning NCAA champion Amherst College in a make-up game Thursday night 6-5.  Freshman Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) led the way for the Pioneers by scoring a game-high four points, while posting a hat-trick. Myers now has a team-leading 17 goals for the season.

The Pioneers (12-11, 8-8), who will head to their tenth consecuitve ECAC Women's West Conference Tournament next week, shot themselves' in the foot with eight total penalties, while Amherst only had two. Amherst was able to capitalize on Utica's penalties by scoring on four power plays goals.

MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) (Concord, NH/ Cushing Academy) and Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) (Falls Church, VA/ Washington Pride) also got in on the scoring for the Pioneers by cashing in one goal and one assist. Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) (Hershey, PA/ Washington Pride) also posted two assists, improving her season total to eight for the season.

Despite the high scoring effort from Myers Amherst was still able to respond. Stephanie Clegg also recorded a hat-trick for the Lord Jeffs, while Ashley Salerno scored two goals of her own. Megan Curry also added a goal for Amherst, while posting an assist as well.

The Pioneers return to the ice in a two-game set on Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Plattsburgh, NY to take on the fourth-ranked Plattsburgh State Cardinals.
