Utica, N.Y. (2/19/2011) - The nationally-ranked No. 10 Utica College men's hockey team is set to host No. 6 Elmira College in an ECAC Men's West Conference match up at the Utica Memorial Auditorium tonight. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. The contest marks the final regular season game for Utica, which earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and will travel to Neumann University next Saturday for a semi-final match up. However, tonight's contest will play a major role in the Pioneers regional seeding, which may determine whether UC earns a bid to the NCAA Tournament in March.
Utica has compiled a program-best 17-7 overall record this season headed into this evenings contest. In two previous meetings against the Soaring Eagles the Pioneers lost two lopsided games on the road. Luckily for UC, tonight's game will be played at the Aud in front of the nations largest crowd. UC has had great success on its home ice this season, boasting a record of 12-2.
The Pioneers are led by junior captain
Tim Coffman (Elverson, PA/Laconia (AJHL)) who leads the team and ranks 22nd nationally with 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists). Freshman
Jon Gaffney (Dover, NJ/Springfield Blues (NAHL)) and classmate
Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)) are the leading rookies on the team with ten goals and ten assists each.
Freshman goalies
Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) and
Evan Smith (Penticton, British Columbia/Calgary Royals (AJHL)) have split time all season. Smith is 9-3 with a .923 save percentage and 1.92 goals against average. Therrien is 8-4 with a .914 save percentage and a 2.29 goals against average.
