UC SOFTBALL CONTINUES ITS WINNING WAYS

Kissimmee, Fla. (3/17/2011) – The Utica College softball improved its overall record to 6-2 on the season after sweeping a double-header at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday. In the first game the Pioneers defeated Wheaton, 10-2 (5 innings). In the second game of the day UC beat Carthage 5-3. Sophomore catcher Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) led the way for Utica going 3-for-7 on the day with four runs scored and two RBIs.

In game one, Wheaton took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but Utica came right back in the bottom of the third and tacked on seven runs to take a 7-2 lead. They scored three more runs an inning later for a 10-2 lead.

Junior pitcher Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) pitched a complete game for UC, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out four. Senior outfielder Claire Gerlach (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) led the offensive charge, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored. Classmate Kim Martin (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) also went 2-for-2 with one walk and two runs scored.

In game two, Utica took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first and never relinquished it, going onto to defeat Carthage, 5-3. Ingalls went 2-for-4 in the second game with two runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore infielder Hannah Barton (Adams Basin, NY/Brockport) went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Junior Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) recorded her first win of the season, pitching four innings while giving up two earned runs and striking out two. Sophomore Stephanie Romanow (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) picked up her first save of the season, pitching three no-hit innings.

Gerlach and Martin had a team-high four hits over the course of two games. Barton drove in four runs on the day. Sophomore Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) scored three runs. Freshman Rebecca Ornstein (Howell, NJ/Howell High School) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The Pioneers wrap up their Florida trip Friday with a double-header against Springfield (9 a.m.) and Centenary (11 a.m.).
