Utica, NY - The Utica College men's tennis team lost 7-2 to host St. John Fisher Sunday at Fisher Courts in Pittsford, NY. Senior
Shaun Kaleta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and junior
Thien Doan (An Giang-Long Xuyen, Viet Nam/) recorded the Pioneers first wins of the season.
UC falls to 0-3 overall as well as 0-3 in Empire 8 Conference play while the Cardinals improve to 4-9 on the season and have a 3-2 mark in conference play.
Kaleta defeated John Whelehan (7-6, 6-7, 10-7) in the first singles match while Doan beat Joseph Aquino (6-2 and 6-2) in the first two sets of the second match. However, Utica lost its next four singles matches and were losing 4-2 headed into doubles competiton.
The Pioneers lost all three matches in doubles competiton (8-5, 8-0, 8-3). Kaleta and Doan battled in the first match but fell short as they were defeated 8-5. Freshman
Daniel Fadden (Lakeland, NY/Bishop Ludden) and senior
Jeff Blazek (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) lost 8-3 in the final match of the three-game weekend set.
The Pioneers return to action Thursday as they host Elmira College at the Utica College Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Soaring Eagles are currently 3-4 on the season and have a 1-3 mark in Empire 8 action.
