MEN'S TENNIS FALLS AT ITHACA

Utica, NY (4/20/2011)- The Utica College men's tennis team fell 9-0 to conference rival and nationally ranked No. 17 Ithaca College on Sunday, April 17.

The Pioneers dropped to an overall and conference record of 0-4, while the Bombers improved to a 7-5 overall and 5-0 in the E8.

UC failed to win a match on the day, but competed and made things close. Josh Rifkin of the Bombers defeated Shaun Kaleta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) of the Pioneers (6-0, 6-2) in first singles. Ithaca dominated the next five singles matches by a combined score of 60-5.

The closest match on the day came in second doubles competition when Les Bowden and Dan Levine (IC) defeated Albert Phalen (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug) and Mike Zaloom (Utica, NY/TR Proctor High School ) (UC), 8-5. The Pioneers lost all three matches in the doubles competition (8-2, 8-5, 8-3).

The Utica College Pioneers return to action on Friday, April 22 as they host Hartwick College at the Utica College Tennis Courts. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. The hawks are 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the E8.
