Utica, N.Y. (4/25/2011) - The Utica men's tennis team lost 9-0 to conference rival Hartwick College on Friday, April 22.
UC failed to win a match, but provided tough competition. Utica's closest result came in the singles event when Marcelo Navarro defeated the Pioneers' Thein Doan (6-3, 6-3).
Sophomore
Albert Phalen (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug) also recorded a commendable performance as he lost (6-1, 6-4) to Mike Del Rosario. Hartwick dominated the next four single matches by a combined score of 40-8.
The Pioneers lost all three matches in doubles competition (8-1, 8-1, 8-2).
Shaun Kaleta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and Thein Doan, and
Albert Phalen (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug) and
Mike Zaloom (Utica, NY/TR Proctor High School ) battled in the first and second doubles matches, while
Sam Cotrupe (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro High School ) and
Daniel Fadden (Lakeland, NY/Bishop Ludden) competed in the third.
The Pioneers now (0-5) return to action Wednesday as they host Empire 8 opponent Elmira College (5-5). The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
