Utica, NY (4-22-11) – The Utica College softball team lost both games to Empire 8 Conference rival Ithaca College Friday at Greenman Field in Utica, NY. The Pioneers lost game one 10-0 in five innings and game two 10-4. UC drops to 14-15 overall and has a 2-8 mark in conference play, while the Bombers improve to 21-7 on the season including a 7-2 record in E8 play.
In game one, Ithaca scored four runs in the first on one hit, three walks and two Utica errors. The
Bombers went on to score six more runs over the course of the next four innings to take a 10-0 lead, headed into the bottom of fifth. UC broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off single by senior right fielder
Claire Gerlach (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), however, IC retired the next three batters en route to victory. Ithaca's Jillian Olmstead threw a complete game, one-hit, shutout as she improved to 5-2 on the season.
In game two, the Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead, in the bottom of the first. IC would answer scoring five runs in their next two at bats and led 5-1. Utica put together a two-run, fourth inning, on three hits as they pulled within two runs of the lead, 5-3. Senior
Kim Martin (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) doubled to left field scoring Gerlach and sophomore
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) followed with a single up the middle, driving in Martin from second. The Bombers retaliated in the top of the fifth with four more runs and one run in the sixth to take a 10-3 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, UC ripped three consecutive hits to start the inning, however the Pioneers could only muster one run as Ithaca completed the sweep.
Sophomore
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville), catcher
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany), and freshman
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) each registered two hits for Utica.
Pitcher
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) tossed 5.0 innings and allowing seven earned runs, while walking five as she fell to 3-6 on the year.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, April 27 as they host RPI at Greenman Field. The non-conference double header is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
