Katlyn Banker (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) netted four goals and added one assist as the Utica College women's lacrosse team lost its final Empire 8 Conference contest of the season to host St. John Fisher College 17-6 Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (6-8, 3-5 Empire 8) dropped to sixth place in the conference with the loss, while Fisher (9-5, 4-3 E8) moved up to fifth place, but an early season loss to RIT will keep the Cardinals out of post season play.
Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead after senior
Lily Fleskes (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) netted her 16th goal of the season 1:54 into the contest. Fisher answered by rattling off eight straight goals in a span of 12:28 to take a commanding 8-1 lead with 13:34 remaining in the first half of play.
UC's
Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and Banker each connected on back-to-back goals to cut the Cardinals' lead to 8-3 with 9:19 remaining before halftime. Fisher closed out the first half with a tally to take a six goal lead, 9-3, into intermission.
Fisher netted three straight goals to open up the second half and the Cardinals found themselves with a 12-3 lead 4:05 into the second half of play. Banker mixed in a goal for UC before Fisher netted five in a row to earn a convincing 17-4 lead with 6:55 left in regulation.
Banker added two more goals before the final horn sounded as the Pioneers lost by 11.
Banker finished the day with five ground balls and Fleskes tallied a team-high five draw controls for UC. Junior goalie
Shelby Barbay (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) stopped seven shots in between the pipes for the Pioneers.
Jennifer Rogaski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) came off the bench and totaled two caused turnovers for the Pioneers.
Taylor Hughes and Melissa Leonhard led the way for the Cardinals with five goals apiece, while Courtney Clare added three goals and three assists. Fisher outshot UC 32-17 and earned a 31-23 ground ball advantage on the afternoon.
UC has just one game remaining on its 2011 schedule and the Pioneers will travel to Keuka for a non conference contest on Tuesday. The first draw control is scheduled for 4 p.m.
