PHALEN WINS FIRST MATCH OF SEASON AS PIONEERS FALL 8-1

Utica, NY (4-28-11) - The Utica College men's tennis team lost, 8-1, to Empire 8 Conference rival Elmira College Wednesday at the Utica College tennis courts. The Pioneers drop to 0-6 overall as well as 0-6 in the conference while the Soaring Eagles improve to 6-5 on the season and have a 3-4 mark in conference play.

UC sophomore, Albert Phalen (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug) registered his first win of the season in the third match in singles competition. Phalen beat Elmira's Ryan Patterson 6-3 and 6-0. Senior Shaun Kaleta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) lost in the first match of singles competition in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).

In doubles competition, Utica battled in the first two matches losing by only three points combined. Phalen teamed up with sophomore Mike Zaloom (Utica, NY/TR Proctor High School ) however lost 8-6 while Kaleta paired up with doubles partner Thien Doan (An Giang-Long Xuyen, Viet Nam/) and lost 8-5.

The Pioneers return to the courts Saturday, Apr. 30 as they host Alfred University in their last match of the season. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be held at the Utica College Tennis Courts. The Saxons are currently 4-7 on the season and hold a 3-2 mark in E8 play.
