Utica, N.Y. (4/6/2011) - The Utica College softball team split a pair of non conference games against visiting Union College at Greenman Field Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers poured in seven early runs and went onto to earn a 7-3 victory in game one, but the Dutchwomen answered with 17 hits in game two to earn a 10-7 win.
UC's record moved to 8-8 overall and Union is now 5-12. Freshman
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) led the way for the Pioneers going 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored in two games. Sophomore catcher
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) went 5-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored, while senior centerfielder
Kim Martin (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) went 4-for-7 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Utica jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the course of the first three innings in game one and never looked back, earning a 7-3 win. Ingalls led the way for the Pioneers in game one going 2-for-3 at the dish with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ingalls sparked both the first and third inning rallies which led to seven
runs for the Pioneers. She ripped an RBI double in the first inning and added a two RBI home run to left field in the third inning.
Junior hurler
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) scattered seven hits and three runs over the course of the complete game, while striking out one, in her sixth win of the season. Martin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in game one, while Jones and
Hannah Barton (Adams Basin, NY/Brockport) each posted one hit, two RBIs and one run scored. Barton's lone hit of game afternoon was her first home run of the season.
The Pioneers jumped out on top 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning in game two after Ingall's drove in one run with a single and Jones roped a two RBI home run in her next at bat to give Utica a two run advantage.
The Dutchwomen responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Martin's two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth gave the Pioneers' their final lead of the day, 5-4. Union tacked on five more runs in the top of the fifth to secure the victory.
The Pioneers return to the diamond on Thursday when they host local rival Hamilton College for a non conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
