New Hartford, N.Y. (9/17/2011) - St. John Fisher College posted a team score of 294 and currently sits atop the leader board after day one of the Empire 8 Conference Championships Saturday at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, N.Y. Fisher's Tyler McArdell, who is the reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year, currently sits in first place after posting a 2-under round of 69 at the 6,767 yard Walter J. Travis designed course.
Day one proved to be a tight race up top with Moravian College coming into the clubhouse just six strokes off the pace set by Fisher. The Greyhound's top four finishers combined for a team score of 300. The University of Scranton currently sits in third place, just one stroke behind Moravian, after posting a 301, while Elmira College stands strong in the fourth position with a team score of 304.
Scranton's Justin Riley shot an even par 71 and is tied for second place on the individual leader board with Moravian's Scott Stires. Rounding out the top seven finishers are Elmira's Nick Decker, Fisher's Thad Wier III, Susquehanna's Patrick Neal and Scranton's Chris Schank, who all carded 3-over par rounds of 74.
All six of Fisher's golfers shot sub-77 rounds and the Cardinals did not have a single competitor place lower than 15th after day one. Fisher's Joe Radolski is in an eighth place tie after carding a 75, while Ryan McGinnis wrapped up his first 18 holes of the weekend with a round of 76.
Susquehanna finished three strokes ahead of Stevens after posting a team score of 311. Kevin Willet shot a 78 for the Crusaders. Cam Hill was the low ball for the Ducks and he is currently tied for eighth place with five others at 75.
Nazareth and Utica finished day one with team scores of 342 and 357, respectively. Tyler Woodward led the way for the Golden Flyers with a round of 78, while UC's
Ethan Kreisel (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) shot a career-best 82 for the Pioneers.
Action resumes on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. St. John Fisher College is acting as the host of the Fall leg, and the second leg of the tournament will be hosted by Scranton University in Hershey, Pa. on April 21-22.
