Hamilton Earns Local Bragging Rights With Win Over UC

Box Score
Hamilton 4, Utica 0 - Box Score

Utica, NY (9-18-11) – The Utica College women's soccer team lost 4-0 to cross-town rival Hamilton College Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Utica College Soccer Field.  The Pioneers are now 2-4 overall, while the Continentals improved to 3-2.

Hamilton opened up the scoring at 25:56 as Maria Treacy recorded her first goal of the season as she found the back of the net after a loose ball came free in the goalie box.

Utica attempted two corner kicks, back-to-back, following the Hamilton goal, however the Pioneers could not cash in.  The Continentals moved the ball into Utica territory and at 37:49 they took a 2-0 advantage as Treacy tallied her second consecutive goal after a perfectly placed corner kick from Charlotte Cosgrove.

The home team came out in the second half with energy, firing three shots within the first nine minutes of play, however they were unable to convert.  The Continentals regained possession shortly thereafter and substituted for a fresh group.  Then at 66:10, just .23 seconds after she entered the contest, Emi Birch registered her first goal of the season off a free kick to give Hamilton a 3-0 lead.

The Continentals scored another goal just over a minute later at 67:24 off a breakaway, as Rachel Hirsch chipped a floater over the goalie to seal the victory.

Junior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) had two of UC's four shots.  Senior goalkeeper Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) fell to 2-4 on the season as she allowed four goals, while recording seven saves.

Hamilton outshot Utica 13-0 in the first half, and 22-4 on the afternoon, and the Continentals have won the last two meetings against UC in shutout fashion.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against Hartwick College.  The contest will be held at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium and is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.  The Hawks are currently 1-4 overall this season.
