UTICA, NY (9/23/11)- The Utica College field hockey team returns to Empire 8 action Saturday when it hosts undefeated Washington & Jefferson College on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK: The Pioneers have had two big wins in the last week … Utica defeated conference rival Steven's Institute of Technology 5-3 in Hoboken, NJ on Saturday …  UC followed that up Wednesday with a 2-1 win at 2010 NCAA tournament participant Geneseo. 

WHERE WE SIT: UC is currently riding the highs of its second two game wins streak of the season and the Pioneers are currently 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8. 

COMING HOME: This is the first of a four-game home stand for the Pioneers… UC has won its last four home games dating back to Oct. 9 last season … The Pioneers lone home contest of the season resulted in a 1-0 win over Oswego State in the pouring rain on Sept. 7.

SERIES: UC is 3-3 all-time against the Presidents. … Last season the Pioneers were knocked out of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament with a 3-2 loss at the hands of W&J… UC lost to the Presidents in two consecutive games to close out the season last year.

YOUNG GUNS: Freshmen have accounted for 10 of the Pioneers' 13 goals on the season … Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) leads the team in scoring with 10 points in six games …  Mackey is also tied for second in the conference in goals (five) … For her efforts, Mackey was named Conference Player of the Week last week … Freshman Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) has netted three goals, including two game winners this season … Classmate Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) has added two goals of her own.

STORMS IS A ROCK IN NET: Senior goalie Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) has started all six games for UC this season and she has registered a 2.00 goals against average to go along with 40 saves … She has all owed just 12 goals and in three of the games she has allowed one goal or less, including one shut out. 

LEADING THE WAY: Senior Mallory Mariano (Oneida, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill) ranks first in the conference in shots (24) and shots per game (4.80) … Mariano is also second on the team with eight points through six games ... Sophomore Ally Sanders (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell) leads UC with three assists this season. 

SCOUTING W&J: The Presidents are led by juniors Erin Barno (14 points) and Amanda Pflumm (11 points) … W&J is currently 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8 and is coming off back-to-back wins over Kenyon and Hartwick.

IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Mallory Mariano (Oneida, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill) needs four points to move into sole possession of 7th place in the College's all-time scoring list … She also ranks 9th all-time with 14 career goals … Senior net minder Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) is third all-time in career saves (236) and saves per game (5.76) ... Storms is also 2nd in all-time wins with 20.
