Utica, N.Y. (9/28/2011) - The Utica College field hockey team snapped a three game winning streak on Wednesday night when it lost to visiting University of Rochester 2-1 in a non conference contest on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Senior forward Mallory Mariano (Oneida, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill) led the Pioneers' comeback with a game-tying goal in the 40th minute, but the visitors were able to answer with the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later to seal the one goal victory.

The Pioneers' record moved to 5-3 overall and they remain undefeated in conference play with a 2-0 ledger.  The Yellow Jackets snapped a two game slide and improved to 7-3 overall on the year.  It proved to be a satisfying victory for the Yellow Jackets after falling to the Pioneers 2-1 in last season's match up.  With the win, U of R now holds a 5-4 all-time advantage over Utica.

After a scoreless first half, which featured three shots on goal from each team, the Yellow Jackets got on the board first 2:32 into the second half when Anna Dobrzynski netted her team-high 12th goal of the year.  Dobrzynski received a crossing pass from Lindsey Randall and stroked it into the back of the cage from five yards out to put Rochester on top 1-0 in the 37th minute.

Mariano responded with the Pioneers' lone goal of the evening just over three minutes later to knot the score at 1-1.  Freshman Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) connected with Mariano on a breakaway to make the game interesting early in the second half.  Mariano's two point effort moved her into sole possession of seventh place on the College's all-time scoring list.

In the 45th minute Rochester senior Alexis Vangellow tipped in the game-winner after a rocket from Randall off a penalty corner to put the visitors on top for good.  Unfortunately UC's Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) received a yellow card in the 65th minute and the Pioneers were forced to play man-down for the majority of the final five minutes.

UC goalie Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) stopped seven shots in the loss, while Madison Wagner made six saves in the cage for Rochester.

Utica returns to Empire 8 Conference action on Saturday when the Pioneers' host Empire 8 Conference foe Nazareth College for game three of a four game home stand at 10:30 a.m.  Fans who cannot make it out to the stadium can follow live video and stats online at www.ucpioneers.com.
