Steele-Norton's First Half Goal Paces Pioneers to 1-0 Victory in Non Stop Rain

Steele-Norton netted her first collegiate goal - which proved to be the game-winner

Utica, N.Y. (9/7/2011) – Freshman Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) made her first collegiate goal a memorable one as she tipped home the game's lone tally, in a constant pouring rain, to lift the Utica College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Oswego State Wednesday night. Sophomore midfielder Ally Sanders (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell) delivered a perfect pass into the circle, right to the stick of the streaking Norton – and Norton re-directed the pass
into the back of the cage at the 21:12 ledger to help UC win its second straight contest.

Norton's goal was all UC senior goalie Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) would need as she stopped five shots in net and earned her first shut out of the season. The Pioneers outshot the Lakers 16-9 on the day.

UC senior defender Jessica Ahearn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) delivered nine corners for the Pioneers and she also made one defensive save. Classmate Emily Stull (Spinnerstown, PA/Perkiomen) quite possibly made the biggest save of the evening in the second half, denying an Oswego shot that slipped past Storms. The shot was just inches from crossing the goal line before Stull stuck her stick out and stopped it right on the door step.

The Pioneers return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Clinton, N.Y. to take on Hamilton College in a non-conference contest at 5 p.m. The Pioneers hope to avenge last year's 3-0 loss at the hands of the Continentals.
