Hoboken, N.J. (1/13/2012) – The Utica College women's basketball team lost to host Stevens Institute of Technology 57-46 on Friday night. Utica (5-8, 0-3 Empire 8) will get right back to action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Hartwick College (9-3, 2-1 Empire 8) for a conference contest. The Pioneers hope to snap a six game slide against the Hawks. Hartwick is coming off a 63-49 loss to conference leader Ithaca College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first two minutes of the contest behind a 3-point bucket from senior
Brittany Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech). Unfortunately for UC, the Ducks answered with an 11-0 run in just over five minutes to take a 13-5 lead at the 12:54 ledger. The Pioneers were able to cut that lead to just four points at half after freshman
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) knocked down a jumper just before the halftime buzzer sounded. The home squad led 23-19 at the intermission.
UC was able to stick with the Ducks for the first 2:31 of the second half until they went on a 14-2 run in just over seven minutes of play to take a commanding 41-25 lead midway through the second half. Utica was able to cut the deficit to single-digits, 48-29, after a free throw from
Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill), but that was as close as the Pioneers would get as the Ducks went on to win by 11.
Filkins finished the day with six points and five rebounds while Baudanza connected on 2-of-4 shots and totaled five points. Kahane came off the bench and totaled four points for UC.
Jillian Barrett netted a game-high 17 points and snagged 14 rebounds for Stevens while Dawn Garcia scored 16 points. Avis Benjamin added ten points and posted five rebounds for the Ducks.
