Utica, NY (1/31/12) – The Utica College men's basketball team looks to put an end to their current three game losing skid this weekend as it hits the road for a pair of Empire 8 Conference games at St. John Fisher College Friday at 8 p.m., and then at Nazareth College Saturday at 4p.m.

This past week Utica snapped a two game winning streak when it dropped three conference games against Ithaca, Hartwick and Stevens.

Leading Scorer: Junior guard Matt Baldwin (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) has been a bright spot for the Pioneers as he leads the team and is ranked fifth in the Empire 8 in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per game. 

Exceeding Expectations: Freshman Aaron Nevins (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) was named Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week for the third time this past week … On the season, Nevins is averaging 8.1 points per game …  He ranks fifth in the conference with 3.4 assists and sixth in the conference with 1.4 steals per game. 

St. John Fisher:  St. John Fisher (10-10, 3-6 Empire 8) is led by junior center Jason Norsen, and senior guard Jordan Gettings … Earlier this season when Utica took on St. John Fisher, the Cardinals were without Norsen, their leading scorer, but they still managed to come away with a 72-60 victory … St. John Fisher split a pair of conference games this past weekend, defeating Elmira College 67-50 Friday, then losing to Alfred University 77-70 Saturday.

Nazareth: Nazareth (14-6, 7-2 Empire 8) is tied with Stevens and Hartwick for first place in the Empire 8 … They are led by senior guard Jason Corletta, who ranks sixth in the Empire 8 in scoring (16.7), and just recently scored his 1,000-point for the Golden Flyers…  Earlier this season when Nazareth took on Utica, the Golden Flyers outscored the Pioneers 45-31 in the final 20 minutes on its way to an 89-76 victory. 

Empire 8 Action: After a week of action Hartwick (18-2, 7-2 Empire 8}, Stevens (15-4, 7-2 Empire 8), and Nazareth (14-6, 7-2 Empire 8) remain tied for first place in the Empire 8 Conference… Ithaca (8-12, 5-4 Empire 8) is now tied with Alfred (12-6, 5-4 Empire 8) for fourth place… St. John Fisher (10-10, 3-6 Empire 8) is in sixth place …  Utica (6-14, 2-7 Empire 8) sits in seventh, and Elmira (0,19, 0-9 Empire 8) remains winless and in eighth place.

On the Road: The Pioneers finish up their four game road trip next week as the travel to Alfred University Friday at 8 p.m., before heading to Elmira College Saturday at 4 p.m.
