Utica, NY (1-4-12) – The Utica College women's basketball team looks to snap a three-game slide this weekend as they head into Empire 8 Conference action against Nazareth and St. John Fisher.
Time & Place: On Friday, the Pioneers will square off against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth for an 6 p.m. scheduled tip-off and then on Saturday, UC will face the Cardinals of SJFC for a 2 p.m. tip … Both games will be held at the Clark Athletic Center in Utica, NY.
UC in 2011-2012: Utica is currently 5-5 after dropping three straight to RPI, Union and SUNYIT … The Pioneers have been streaky so far, after opening up the year with back-to-back wins, followed by back-to-back losses, and then a three-game winning streak followed by a three-game slide … 2012 features 14-of-15 games in the E8 Conference … UC plays four straight against conference opponents on back-to-back weekends before hosting Drew University on Tuesday Jan. 17th ... UC wraps up the year with 10 consecutive games against E8 opponents.
Scouting the Opponents: Nazareth presently holds a 6-3 record … The Golden Flyers are riding the highs of a four-game streak including a tournament victory as at their own Nazareth Invitational … St. John Fisher is one spot behind UC with a 4-6 mark this season … The Cardinals recently snapped a three-game skid as they defeated Thiel College 71-69, however Fisher has dropped four of their last six.
All-Time Against the Opposition: Since the 2005-2006 season, UC is undefeated against the Golden Eagles with 12 consecutive wins while outscoring them by an average margin of 13.5 … The Pioneers are 8-4 against the Cardinals in recent years as the teams' split the season series the last two seasons … Previously, Utica had won sixth straight from 2006-2009 … UC beat Fisher last year 77-66 and lost 82-79.
McGee On Another Level: Senior guard
Katie McGee (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth) is among the league leaders as she ranks in the top 10 in 10 different categories … McGee is first in assists (5.4 Avg/G) and minutes played (36.8 Avg/G) and she ranks third in 3-point percentage (.441%) … She is also eighth in free throw percentage (.730 Pct), steals (2.1 Avg/G), defensive rebounds (4.7 Avg/G), assist/turnover ratio (0.9 Ratio), tenth in field goal percentage (.453%) and 12th in scoring (12.2 Avg/G).
Fiore in the Paint: In the conference, junior forward
Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) is second in scoring (16.9 Avg/G) and fifth (8.1 Avg/G) in rebounds as she has started in eight straight games … Fiore is also 11th in field goal percentage as she is shooting 44.3% from the floor … The Epping, NH native led the E8 in scoring last season as she was named First-Team All-Conference.
Return to the Hardwood: UC hits the road next weekend as it heads to Hoboken, NJ on Friday and Oneonta, NY on Saturday … The Pioneers will face Stevens Institute of Technology Friday night for a 6 p.m. tip-off before they travel Hartwick College on Saturday for 2 p.m. start.
