Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season with Win Over Cazenovia

Utica, NY (10/13/12) – The Utica College men's tennis team opened up its 2012-13 campaign with an impressive 9-0 sweep of visiting Cazenovia College Saturday.  The contest was a part of the College's Homecoming festivities.  First singles player Jon Gorman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) won his (6-0, 6-0) and he also teamed up with Dan Fadden in second singles to defeat Cazenovia's Greg Rizzo and Jorge Blass, 8-0. 

UC's Albert Phalen (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug) downed Zack Fullen 6-1, 6-1 in second singles and Phalen joined forces with Mike Zaloom (Utica, NY/TR Proctor High School ) in first singles to defeat Caz's Fullen and Fred Huante, 8-0. 

Zaloom topped Haunte in third singles (6-0, 6-1), while Fadden defeated Blass in fourth singles (6-1, 6-0).  Sam Cotrupe (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro High School ) topped Mark McDermott 6-1, 6-0 in fifth singles and Brian Lawler rounded out the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sanjiv Varghese.

Lawler and Ryan Valle (Winthrop, ME/Winthrop High School) earned a convincing 8-0 win in third doubles.  The Pioneers moved their record to 1-0 on the year, while Caz dropped to 0-1.
