UC Drops Two Games on Sunday as Host of E8 Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Utica, NY (10/21/2012) – Liz Sacco (Franklin, Mass. /Franklin) led the way for Utica, totaling nine kills over the course of two games, as the Pioneers dropped two straight contests against visiting Ithaca and Stevens at the Empire 8 Conference Crossover Tournament on Sunday.   The Pioneers lost the first game of the day against Ithaca 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-13), before falling in straight sets against Stevens (25-20, 25-13, 25-13) in the night cap. 

The Pioneers record moved to 7-21 overall and 1-7 in E8 play.  Ithaca improved to 12-12 and 3-3 in the E8, while Stevens increased its record to 14-15 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

In the Pioneers opening game of the day against Ithaca, Sacco posted a team-best five kills.  Kellee Furno (Baltimore, MD/Maryvalle) led the way with 12 assists, while Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) chipped in with 10 digs.  Nicotera also added three kills.  Shauna Murray (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson) and Madison Bayer (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) each chipped in with three kills, while Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia) added five assists.

Christine Flannery led Ithaca with ten kills, six service aces, five assists and five digs.  Marissa Weil added nine kills, 13 digs and a service ace for the Bombers.  Justine Duryea also posted six kills. 

Sacco tied for the team-lead with four kills in the loss to Stevens.  Bayer also added four kills and posted five digs.  Nicotera added two service aces and a team-best seven digs.  Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) totaled three kills, while Hayley Strife (Lowville, NY/Lowville) added two kills of her own.  Lauria posted a team-best 13 assists and Kellee Furno (Baltimore, MD/Maryvalle) added five assists. 

Maggie Kowalska registered a team-best 11 kills for the Ducks.  She also posted six digs, two solo blocks and two service aces.  Katie Hall chipped in with eight kills, while Mary Caulson added a game-high nine digs and seven kills.

The Pioneers return to the hardwood on Wednesday when they travel to Sage College for a non conference match at 7 p.m. UC hopes to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Gators at the Union Invitational on Sept. 14th.
