KISSIMMEE, FL (3/12/12)- The Utica College softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL. UC lost the first game 6-0, to Endicott College, before rebounding to knock off Wheaton College 4-3.
In the first game, Endicott jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Utica gave up four walks in the inning. After Endicott's first run, pitcher
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) was replaced by freshman
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) who walked one and struck out one to end the inning.
Endicott scored one run in both the second and third innings to bring the score to 4-0. The Gulls capped off the scoring in the fifth as they drove in the final to runs.
UC recorded three hits in the game, while the Gulls had five hits.
In the second game, UC jumped out to an early lead as junior
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and sophomore Kristy Jones each drove in runs. The Pioneers scored again as junior
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) doubled to left, scoring senior
Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor). Plummer ended up scoring after classmate
Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) had an RBI single.
The Lyons mounted a comeback in the sixth inning as junior Megan Roy doubled to left field to score three runs. Freshman
Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) came in to relieve starter
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson), and picked up her first save of the season.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow for games at 9 a.m. 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
