Utica, NY -- The Utica College women's softball team swept a double header against local rival SUNYIT Wednesday afternoon at Greenman Field. The Pioneers topped the Wildcats 5-1 in game one, before knocking off the visitors 2-0 in the nightcap. Six different Pioneers registered at least two hits and the UC pitching staff combined to give up just one run over the course of 14 innings.
Junior
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) went 3-for-6 with one run scored on the afternoon, while junior captain
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) went 3-for-6 with two RBIs.
Shortstop Linsey Brognano, a two-sport standout at SUNYIT, went 2-for-5 with one run scored on the afternoon, while senior Juleah Vedder went 2-for-6 at the plate with one RBI.
UC has now won seven consecutive games as the Pioneers moved their overall record to 9-4. SUNYIT fell below .500 for the first time this year, as their record decreased to 4-5 overall.
Game One – Utica 5, SUNYIT 1 –

The Pioneers jumped out of the gates early in their home opener and they never looked back, scoring three runs in bottom of the first inning, as they eventually went on to down the Wildcats 5-1. Junior transfer
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) went 3-for-4 and scored one run for the Pioneers, while senior hurler
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) pitched a complete game and gave up just five hits in her fifth victory of the young season.
Plummer ripped a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the first to spark the Pioneers' early 3-0 rally. SUNYIT responded with its only run of the afternoon when senior slugger Juleah Vedder ripped an RBI single to centerfield to score short stop Lindsey Brognano. That would be all the scoring SUNYIT would get as Kingsbury scattered two hits over the course of the final three innings to lift UC to the four run victory.
Plummer and
Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) each registered an RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning to help UC secure the victory.
Game Two – Utica 2, SUNYIT 0 –

Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) pitched her first collegiate shut out as the Pioneers cruised to a 2-0 victory in game two. Enny struck out a career-best five as she won her second game of the year and lowered her ERA to 1.64. Sophomore outfielder
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) hit her first home of the year in the bottom of the first inning to get the Pioneers' off on the right foot.
Freshman
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Carcone, to raise the UC lead to 2-0.
The Pioneers were solid defensively all afternoon, committing just one error, on their way to two straight wins.
Utica returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Southern Vermont College for a double header at Greenman Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
