Softball Looks to Extend Streak Saturday vs. Southern Vermont

UTICA, NY (3-23-12)- The Utica College softball team looks to continue its winning streak as it hosts Southern Vermont College, Saturday.  The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Greenman Field. 

Hot Streak:  The Pioneers are on a seven-game winning streak and are 9-4 overall… Over the last seven games, UC has outscored its opponents 43-6. 

Balanced Attack: UC has gotten hits from 12 different players… Junior Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) leads the team with a .447 batting average… She has recorded at least one hit in all but two games so far, and has seven stolen bases… Freshman Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) and junior Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) rank second and third in hitting on the team, respectively… Fitzgerald has 14 hits, while Plummer has 13… Junior Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) is currently on a five game hitting streak, while reigning Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) is hitting .314 and has one home run.

On the Mound: Each of UC's three starting pitchers has registered at least one win for the Pioneers this season… Senior Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) is 5-1 with 11 strikeouts and a 2.04 ERA, while classmate Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) is 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA... Freshman Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) is 3-1 with 12 strikeouts and a 1.64 ERA... Freshman closer Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) has a 0.93 ERA, seven strikeouts, and three saves. 

Scouting Southern Vermont:  The Mountaineers are currently 1-7 overall and are coming off two 8-0 losses to Sage…  This will be the first meeting between the two teams… Southern Vermont is led by senior Alyssa Davis, who has a .353 batting average and one home run.

Next Time Out: UC will return to action next Saturday as it hosts Empire 8 opponent Elmira College.  The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
