Utica, NY (3-24-12) – The Utica College softball team swept Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon at Greenman Field in Utica NY. The Pioneers beat the Mountaineers 9-1 and 10-2, both in six innings. Junior
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) and freshman
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) led the way for UC as they totaled eight hits, eight RBI and five runs scored on the afternoon.
Game One
Utica jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Fitzgerald hit a towering shot over the left center field wall, scoring sophomore
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore). In the third inning, UC tacked on four more runs on four hits at the hands of a two rally. Junior second baseman
Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) ripped a two-out, two run triple scoring Fitzgerald and junior
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville). Senior
Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor) followed with a double scoring Carcone and then freshman Meagan Fleming roped a single to center as Anson crossed the plate to give Utica a 6-0 lead. The Pioneers went on to score three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings as they close out their tenth season victory, 9-1. Plummer went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI while Fitzgerald went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Pioneer offense.
Senior
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) tossed an impressive one-hitter over five complete innings to improve to 2-2 on the season. Butler stuck out four while allowing just one run, which came on a long ball in the top of the fourth inning from E Fleming (sister of Utica's Meagan Fleming).
Game Two
UC took an early 1-0 lead in the first as leadoff hitter Matan singled, stole second and eventually scored on a Jones single up the middle. Utica edged to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Carcone led off with a single, stole second and later scored on a
Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor) ground out. The Pioneer offense broke out in the fourth and fifth innings as it totaled eight runs (four each) to close out game two, 10-2, by way of the mercy rule.
Freshman reliever
Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) recorded her first collegiate win in her first start on the mound for UC. Thompson threw 4.1 innings and struck out three while allowing just two earned runs on four hits.
The Pioneers return to the field Saturday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against Elmira College. The afternoon double header will be held at Greenman Field (Utica, NY) with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
