Saratoga Springs, NY – The Utica College softball team moved its win streak to 11 games as it swept host Skidmore College Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers improved to 13-4 overall as they defeated the Thoroughbreds 3-2 in game one and 10-3 in game two. Junior
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) went 6-for-9 on the day and totaled three RBIs and two runs scored, while junior
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) went 4-for-7 on the afternoon, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning of game one to help lift the Pioneers to a one run victory.
Senior hurler
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) improved to 6-1 on the year after pitching 6.0 innings and striking out two in the game one victory. Freshman
Meagan Fleming went 3-for-4 and totaled two RBIs and two runs in game two, while classmate
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) pitched a complete-game and struck out a career-best ten batters to help guide Utica to a seven run victory in game two.
Game One – Utica 3, SKidmore 2
After four full scoreless innings in game one, the Pioneers crossed the plate first when senior
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored after a groundout from junior first baseman
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville). The home team answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, before Ingalls hit her towering two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning, scoring
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore), to give UC a 3-1 advantage.
Skidmore scored one more run off of Kingsbury in the bottom of the sixth, but freshman reliever
Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) came in and shut the door in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing no hits, to preserve the Pioneers' one run victory en route to earning her fourth save of the season.
Six different Pioneers tallied at least one hit in the game one win, including Jones, senior short stop
Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor), Butler and left fielder
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk).
Game Two -- Utica 10, Skidmore 3
Utica used a five run fourth inning and strong pitching from freshman
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) to earn a seven run victory, 10-3, in game two. Matan lit up the opposing pitchers, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and Fleming had a career day at the plate (3-for-4, two RBIs) to help Utica earn its 11th straight non-conference victory.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first, the Pioneers poured it on in the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits to put the game out of reach. Anson had a two-RBI single and Matan added an RBI single in the fourth to help spark the Pioneer rally.
Utica outscored Skidmore 4-2 in the final three innings to earn the victory. UC out hit the Thoroughbreds 15-6 in game two and Enny totaled 10 strikeouts to close out the victory.
The Pioneers return to action on the road Wednesday when they travel to Union College to take on the Dutchwomen at 3 p.m.
