Clinton, NY – The Utica College softball team got back to its winning ways by taking a pair of games from host Hamilton College in nearby Clinton, NY Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers won game one 10-2 and turned right back around to defeat the Continentals 7-4 in the night cap. Junior
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) continued her unprecedented play at the plate, going 6-for-7 with four RBIs, four runs scored and two triples to pace the Pioneers. In her current six game hitting streak, Matan is batting .727 (16-for-22) with nine runs scored, five RBIs and three stolen bases.
As a team, the Pioneers (16-9) posted 29 hits, good for a .468 team batting average as they outscored the Continentals

Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor) went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and freshman
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) went 5-for-8 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) went 4-for-8 with two RBIs and
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) continued to play well, posting four hits and two runs scored.
The Pioneers' pitching staff allowed just one earned run over the course of 14 innings, while striking out six Continentals. UC returns to the diamond on Wednesday night when it travels to Oswego to take on the Lakers at 3:30 p.m.
Game One – Utica 10, Hamilton 2 – Final
UC was able to produce 18 hits and senior pitcher
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) did not allow an earned run in six innings of work as the Pioneers' defeated the Continentals 10-2. Kingsbury struck out two and scattered six hits, while
Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) pitched one inning of relief and struck out two.
The Pioneers earned a 3-0 lead over the course of the first two innings in game one. Matan opened the game with a triple, and Traglia followed that up with a single, to give UC a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. UC added four second inning hits, to score two runs, behind rips from
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany),
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), Anson and Matan.
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning to put UC up 4-0. Hamilton got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Pioneers responded with two more runs to take a commanding 6-1 advantage. Anson opened the inning with a triple to right field and she was eventually scored by a sacrifice fly from Matan. Traglia scored on a throwing error to give UC its five run lead.
Utica tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory. Ingalls, Butler, Matan, Traglia and sophomore
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) all tallied singles in the seventh to help UC secure its 15th win of the year.
Game Two – Utica 7, Hamilton 4 – Final
The Pioneers came out firing again in game two, scoring five of its seven runs in the first three innings. Matan, Traglia and Jones each registered two hits for UC, while Butler did not allow an earned run as she won her third game of the year on the mound.
Jones opened the second inning with a double to left centerfield and junior
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) singled to spark the Pioneer offense. Ingalls drove in Jones and second baseman
Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) posted a sacrifice fly, scoring Plummer, to give UC an early 2-0 lead.
Utica kept the pressure on in the third inning as they opened up with four straight hits from Anson, Matan, Traglia and Fitzgerald. Anson and Matan both eventually scored, and Jones hit a sacrifice fly to score Traglia, to put the Pioneers in the driver's seat, 5-0.
Hamilton responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but UC had every answer, scoring two more in the top of the fifth as the Pioneers claimed a 7-2 lead. Matan, Traglia and Jones teamed up once again to help UC score two in that fifth inning. The Continentals managed two runs in their final three at-bats, but it was not enough, as Utica freshman reliever
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) closed the door.
