Oswego, NY (4-11-12) – The Utica College softball team swept SUNY Oswego Wednesday, 9-5 and 8-5, to make it four straight.  Junior Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and freshman Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) went 11-for-16 on the day while combining four home runs, 11 RBI and eight runs scored to lead UC.

Game One
Dominique Carcone

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at bat as Fitzgerald smacked a two-run homer.  The home team answered in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run off the bat of Shannon Baker, knotting up the score at 2-2.

UC regained the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth, as Ingalls led of the inning with a solo shot over the fence.  The Lakers came right back in the bottom half of the inning as Baker cracked another two-run homer to give Oswego its first lead of the day, 4-3.

After a scoreless fifth, Utica put together a three-run sixth inning off a junior Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) three-run shot to give UC a 6-4 edge.  The Lakers would score one run, in the bottom of the sixth, with the help of a Utica error, cutting the lead to one, 6-5.  However, the Pioneers would cushion a four-run advantage in the top of the seventh en route to closing out game one, 9-5.

Ingalls tallied three hits, three runs scored and two RBI while Fitzgerald and Carcone combined for six RBI and three runs scored.

Senior Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) moved to 9-2 on the season with 5.0 innings of work while freshman Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) registered her fifth save as she fanned three of the last six Lakers to seal the win.

Game Two

The home team pushed to a 4-0 lead on six hits with back-to-back two-run innings in the second and third.  UC responded quickly with a four run fourth, tying the contest 4-4, on five hits.  Leadoff hitter junior Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) drilled a two-run homer followed by a two out, two-run single by Ingalls.

Utica shut down Oswego in consecutive at bats before manufacturing four runs in the sixth on a grand slam by Ingalls, giving UC an 8-4 lead.  Thompson earned her second victory of the season on the hill as she retired 7-of-10 batters, in 1.2 innings of relief, and is now 2-0 on the mound.

Ingalls capped a career day with six RBI in game two including a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish.  Fitzgerald tallied three hits and two runs scored while senior Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) added two hits and one run to complete the sweep.

Utica is now 18-9 overall including a 1-3 record in the Empire 8 while the Lakers fall to 8-11 on the season. The Pioneers return to action this weekend as they head to Rochester, NY for back-to-back double headers against Empire 8 rivals Nazareth and St. John Fisher College's.  UC will face Naz on Saturday and Fisher on Sunday with the games set to start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. both days.
