Utica, NY (4/28/12)- The Utica College softball team lost both games to visiting Empire 8 opponent Alfred University, Saturday.
Freshman
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) led the team going 5-for-8 on the day, including a homerun, and a team-best three RBI, and three runs scored.
UC finished the season with a 22-17 overall record and a 4-8 mark in conference play, while Alfred improved to 26-10 overall and 7-3 in the Empire 8.
Game One
After a scoreless two innings, Alfred broke out in the top of the third scoring four runs on five hits. Freshman Lauren Fix opened the scoring with a leadoff homer. Five batters later, Angela Netta hit a two-out double that scored two.
Utica finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as Fitzgerald hit a solo homerun. The Pioneers bounced back in the fifth as junior
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) hit a two-out single. Matan advanced to second when freshman
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) singled. Fitzgerald then hit a single to score Matan.
Alfred capped off the scoring in the top of the sixth as Breeal Delgado hit a three-run home run.
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) struck out two batters in five innings and fell to 11-6 on the season.
Game Two
UC opened up the second game scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Matan hit a leadoff single, and advanced two second as
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) hit a sacrifice bunt. Fitzgerald singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw, as Matan scored. Next,
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) doubled to center field, scoring Fitzgerald. Junior
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) then hit an RBI single to send Plummer home. Senior pitcher
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) added another run for UC as she hit a two-out double to left field to score classmate
Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor).
Alfed rebounded in the top of the second with four runs of its own. The Saxons scored their first two runs on errors, leading to a two-RBI double for Delgado.
The score remained knotted until the fifth when the Saxons earned one run.
Alfred padded its lead in seventh as sophomore Danielle Mastropierro hit a two-RBI single.
UC began a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Fitzgerald doubled and Plummer singled. Ingalls then hit an RBI single. With one out,
Jess Anson (Utica, NY/Proctor) ripped a line drive that pitcher Victoria Kramp snagged out of the air and picked off Ingalls at first.
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) gave up three earned runs in two innings pitched, while freshman
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) also gave up three earned runs in five innings of relief, while striking out five.
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) went 4-for-4 in game two, with one run scored and one RBI. Matan went 4-for-8 on the day with two runs scored, while Ingalls finished 4-for-6 with two RBI.
UC finished with a record over .500 for the second consecutive year and its best record since 2006.
