Potsdam, NY – The Utica College women's lacrosse team held a 7-4 lead with 11:57 left in the game before host Postdam State rallied with four consecutive goals, including the game winner with 2:31 left in overtime, to lift the Bears to an 8-7 victory in the final game of the year for the Pioneers on Sunday. Senior
Katlyn Banker (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) closed out her illustrious four year career with three goals, while classmate
Maria Santucci (Holliston, MA/Marian) added two goals in her final game in the orange and blue.
The Pioneers wrapped up their 2012 campaign with an 8-7 overall record, while host Potsdam moved its record to 5-11. UC led 4-2 at the half, but the Bears outshot the visitors 24-11 after halftime and outscored UC 6-3 in that same span to earn the victory.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first 27:45 of action behind two goals from Banker and one each from Santucci and
Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville). Kane assisted on Banker's first two goals of the game, while freshman Morgan Dupont tallied an assist on
Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville)'s score.
Potsdam's Maribeth Simmons scored before the half to decrease Utica's lead to 4-2 at the intermission. Potsdam opened up the second half with a goal, but the Pioneers responded with three of the game's next four goals to take a 7-4 lead with just under 12 minutes to go in regulation.
With 5:16 left in the second half the Bears began their game-winning rally. Three different Potsdam players netted one goal in the final 5:16 to knot the score at 7-7. Denise Johns posted the game-tying goal with 1:13 left in regulation.
Whitney Boshart tallied the game-winner with 2:13 left to play in OT to help the Bears past the Pioneers.
Senior goalie
Shelby Barbay (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) stopped 13 shots in net for Utica, while Banker added a team-high four caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls. Freshman
Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) also chipped in with four ground balls.
