Utica, NY (4/3/12)- The Utica College softball team looks to continue its success, Wednesday, as it travels to Schenectady, NY for a double-header against Union College. The non-conference match up is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Where We Sit: The Pioneers are currently 13-4 overall and riding the highs of an 11-game winning streak… They are coming off two wins (3-2, 10-3) at Skidmore on Sunday… UC was led by juniors
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) and
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany)… Matan went 6-for-9 on the day with three RBI, while Ingalls went 4-for-7, including a two-run homer in the Pioneers 3-2 victory.
Matan the Machine: Centerfielder
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) has been a machine at the plate… She leads the team in batting average (5.08), slugging percentage (.603), runs scored (13), hits (32), total bases (38), and stolen bases (10)… She has been held hitless just twice on the season.
On the Mound: All four Utica pitchers have registered at least one win on the season… Senior
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) leads the way with a 6-1 record, 1.56 ERA, and 13 strikeouts in 40.1 innings pitched… Freshman
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) has also been an ace for UC… Enny is 4-1 with 26 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA in 35 innings pitched… In her last outing, Enny had a career-high 10 strikeouts as the Pioneers downed Skidmore 10-3...
Haley Butler (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and
Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) combine for the six other starts and 13 appearances.
Freshmen Stepping Up: Classmates
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk), Meagan Fleming, and
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) are second, third, and fourth on the team in batting average, respectively… Traglia has a .429 average on 35 at bats, while Fleming has compiled a .375 average on 24 at bats, and Fitzgerald at .354 on 48 at bats.
Scouting Union: The Dutchwomen are 6-6 overall and are coming off a split at Oneonta… UC is 3-13 against Union dating back to 2003… Last year the teams split, with UC winning the first game 7-3, before dropping the second game 10-7… Sophomore
Kristie Jones (Brewerton, NY/Paul V Moore) went 4-for-5 with four RBI and one home run, while Ingalls was 5-for-7 with four RBI and four runs scored in the two games.
Looking Ahead: UC will open up league play as they travel to Ithaca, NY to take on Empire 8 Conference opponent, Ithaca College, on Friday… The double header is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
