Ithaca, NY – The Utica College softball team dropped a pair of games in its Empire 8 Conference opener at regional
power Ithaca College Friday night. The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, but the Bombers answered with four runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 4-1 victory. UC was able to hold Ithaca scoreless for the first four innings of game two, but the home team proved to be too strong as it tallied five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 5-0 victory.

Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) led the way for the Pioneer offense by going 3-for-6 at the plate with one run scored.
Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) tallied two hits in five at-bats. Senior pitcher
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) threw four scoreless innings in game one until the Bombers got to her in the bottom of the fifth, while freshman
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) pitched four scoreless innings in game two, but the Bombers managed to find their groove at the plate in the fifth inning as they eventually went on to win by five runs.
The Pioneers, who have lost four in a row, are now 13-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play headed into a key doubleheader at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. The twin bill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Ithaca 4, Utica 1 – Game One Final
Matan led off game one with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 advantage. Kingsbury struck out three, while holding the Bombers to zero runs in the first four innings. The home team used three hits to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth Ithaca added three more hits and scored two runs to take a three run lead, 4-1, headed into the final inning. Unfortunately the Pioneers were held hitless in the top of the seventh as they lost by three runs.

Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and Carcone each tallied one hit to account for all of the Pioneers' offense in game one.
Cassidy Thompson (Bend, OR/West Valley) gave up just one hit and walked one in .2 innings of relief work for the Pioneers.
Ithaca 5, Utica 0 – Game Two Final
UC mustered five hits but they could not cross the plate in a 5-0, game two, loss against the Bombers. Matan registered two hits, while Carcone,
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) and Hayley Butler each tallied one. Enny started the game and held the Bombers scoreless through four innings until the home squad exploded for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Enny pitched 4.2 innings, giving up just five hits, but she also walked four batters.
Ithaca scored three runs on three hits and three walks in the bottom of the fifth inning to force Utica Head Coach
Pat Mineo to go to the bull pen. Thompson came on in relief once again and was able to get out of the fifth inning jam, but the Bombers tacked on two more runs, on three hits, in the bottom of the sixth, to earn the five run victory.
